Essential Winter Driving Tips

It’s not always cold during Austin winters, but when it is, Austinites are often left feeling unprepared for the weather. Rain or shine, ice or snow, we want you to feel safe on the road. So your friends at Leif Johnson Ford are here with some ways to help you and your vehicle survive even the chilliest of days!

Tips for Driving Safe in Winter Weather

winter

  • Make sure your vehicle is winterized before driving. This means having your Leif Johnson Ford service department check the battery, antifreeze, wipers, windshield wiper fluid, ignition system, thermostat, headlights, hazard lights, exhaust, etc.
  • Ensure that your car is running well. Change your oil, check your battery and make sure your gas tank is always full. This will help keep you from becoming stranded in bad weather. Again, your Leif Johnson Ford team would be happy to help get your vehicle into the best condition possible.
  • Plan in advance. When weather conditions are poor, it’s important to always be prepared. Check weather conditions in your area before leaving the house, and always make sure to take the safest route to wherever you are heading.
  • Have an emergency kit handy at all times. A cell phone and charger, battery operated or hand-crank radio, jumper cables, a spare tire, flares, blankets and sleeping bags, flashlights with extra batteries, a first aid kid, water, warm clothing, matches, sand, a windshield scraper and brush, a basic toolkit, tow rope, compass and road map are all great essentials to have on hand.
  • Ford owners, have Sync with 911 assistance handy. This assists drivers to place a call to emergency operators in three different languages and also gives GPS coordinates of the car’s position in case of an accident.
  • Buckle up. This may seem like a given, but it’s something that is all too often forgotten. No matter how close you are to home, always make sure everyone in your vehicle has their seatbelt fastened.
  • Be extra careful when driving on bridges and overpasses Elevated roadways are the first to freeze, so always use caution when driving in bad weather.
  • Always leave a large space to traffic when driving up hills. If you need to stop while ascending a hill, it can be difficult to pull away again.
  • Reduce speed and keep a farther distance from other vehicles. On slick roadways, a vehicle needs 3x more space to stop.
  • If your vehicle begins to skid, gently steer in the direction of the skid. This will allow you to regain control. You may feel the need to jerk the car in the opposite direction, but make sure to resist this urge. Straighten your vehicle when you have regained traction.
  • Do not make sharp turns or brake suddenly. This can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.
  • Pump the brakes when stopping. This will keep your tires from spinning on the ice and you will reduce the risk of losing traction and fishtailing.
  • If there is ice on the road, take extra precautions to be smooth with the steering and the throttle. Abrupt movements can cause slides on slippery surfaces.

These simple but effective tips will allow you to be safe, regardless of the weather Texas decides to throw our way! If there is anything we can do to help winterize your vehicle, contact us at 512-454-3711 and make an appointment today!

Pros and Cons Of Warming Car Before Driving

This winter has been an odd one for us Austinites. While the weather is always fairly unpredictable this time of year, these last few months have fluctuated even more than normal. The unreliability of 70 to 30 degrees in a twenty-four hour span can be taxing on the wardrobe and on the nerves. Many car-owners prefer to warm their car up by turning it on before driving off. What are your thoughts on this? Does this make for a better functioning vehicle? Yay or nay?

cars

Today we’d love to take a minute to answer that exact question.

Question: What are the positives and negatives of warming up my car prior to leaving the house?

Pros :

  • Let’s start with the obvious… You’re cozy and WARM during your entire commute.
  • With newer Ford models offering remote start, you don’t even need to step outside to warm up your car. A heated car is as simple as pushing a button from the comfort of your home!
  • Your safety is another reason to warm up your car before driving off. Defrosting allows for a much better line of vision, making an accident much less likely.
  • When vehicles had carburetors before the 1980’s, it was often necessary to warm up the vehicle; warming the car for several minutes allowed the right amount of fuel and air to go to the engine. Without this combination, vehicles would stall and sputter. The transition to the electronic fuel injection meant that the proper air-fuel mix was delivered without the necessity of warming up a car. Though the tradition has continued over the years, warming up the car is not currently necessary to keep your car running.

Cons –

  • Idling your engine for long periods of time has the potential to cause a raw gasoline seep into the oil. This may cause wear and tear and damage to your vehicle.
  • The longer the car is on, the more fuel burns. For every 15 minutes your car idles, you lose a quarter gallon of gas. The more fuel that burns, the more money you are burning!
  • Excessive idling can cause damage to other parts of your car, such as the spark plugs, exhaust system and cylinders.
  • Idling for a prolonged amount of time is also noted to be bad for the environment and human health.
  • The engine actually warms up faster being driven!

The verdict:

Taking about 30 seconds to let the car warm up for your own comfort and safety is one thing. But when it comes to your car’s overall performance and our environment, it’s best not to leave an idle car for longer than that. The idea that your car needs time to warm up before driving is based on vehicles that are now decades old. With current car technology, you are good to quickly drive away into your daily routine. Happy commuting, friends!

Using Waze in your Ford thanks to SYNC

Great news! Waze, the popular smart-route navigation system available on Apple and Android, is now being added to Sync 3 thanks to our friends at Ford!

wazeford82

Not familiar with Waze? We’d love to explain.

Waze allows its users to improve their drive time around traffic, and gives info on accidents, road hazards, construction, HOV lane support and more. That is especially great for days like today, where the weather is below freezing in Austin and #ATXWX road closures, extra congestion and accidents are all-too-common. Winter weather is much easier to combat with the safety and convenience of Waze in your Ford.

This community-based app will be available via Ford’s AppLink tech. The Waze interface featured on the in-car central display is powered by your phone, making it both simple and accessible.

Ford is the first manufacturer to integrate Waze into its own entertainment system. Now when a phone with Waze is plugged in to your Ford, it will automatically display with voice command, touchscreen controls and overall full functionality on the Sync 3 system.  This feature will be available to all 2018 Ford models in the next few weeks, and all you need is a USB cord to get going.

The integrated Waze compatibility means that driving your Ford will be even more fun and convenient than before.

How To: Use Windshield Wiper De-Icer

Howdy, friends! It’s been a mild fall in Austin as of late, but we are due to get some cold fronts in the near future. When this happens, it’s always best to have a vehicle prepared for chillier circumstances. We’re here to help you with that!

Did you know that many of our Fords come equipped with a windshield wiper de-icer?

This feature can help your front wipers from icing over when parked in colder weather. A heating element at the base of the windshield warms the windshield where the wipers lie, which helps prevent ice build up so they won’t freeze to the glass. This helps keep the wiper blades pliable in colder weather, so they make contact with the glass over the entire arch for a clean sweep.

To activate, simply push the rear defrost button, or using your key fob, press the lock button, followed by the remote start button two times. If your vehicle is equipped with Sync Connect and you have Ford pass downloaded (See our blog here for more on that.)  you can also conveniently activate from your smart phone. Go to the app menu screen on your smart phone, simply tap the ‘Vehicles Control’ tab, followed by remote start.

It’s that simple!

We at Leif Johnson Ford always want to help our customers and fellow Ford-lovers any way that we can. Please let us know if you have any other questions and we get back to you with an answer from one of our experts as quickly as possible!

Ford Pass How-To

fordpasssync

Did you know that your Ford vehicle may be equipped with a feature that allows you to stay connected and control certain features remotely? This includes unlocking and locking your car doors and even starting your engine from your phone! If you have SYNC connect and a compatible smartphone, you are good to go! Here’s what you’ll need to do.

https://youtu.be/MheqNWskp-s

  1. Download Ford Pass from the app store of Google Play. If you have not already done so, create an account via the Ford Pass app.
  2. Add your SYNC Connect equipped vehicle. Go to the My Vehicles option and click Add Vehicle. Select the plus sign option if you would like to add a second vehicle.
  3. Scan or enter your VIN number by selecting the Use Camera tab, and point the camera at your VIN label located on your vehicle’s driver doorsill. You’ll see a “Scanned Successfully” screen when this step is complete.
  4. Assign a vehicle nickname. Hit ‘Finish.’
  5. You’ll now see a screen prompting you to activate SYNC Connect by touching the ‘Activate SYNC Connect’ button.
  6. After a few moments, go to your vehicle and start it. You will now see a pop-up on your vehicle’s SYNC Connect touchscreen. Select the “Allow” button to continue. If you do not touch ‘Allow’ within ten startups, you will not gain access to remote features and will need to reactivate from the beginning.
  7. That’s it! Remote features can now be accessed from your phone’s Ford Pass app! Enjoy!

Ford How To

storm

This time of year is unpredictable when it comes to weather in Texas. Did you know lightening kills more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes? Lightning can be unpredictable, so follow these steps to keep your and your family safe from the storm.

  1. Always know your local weather forecast. Try to stay at home until the storm has passed, or until thirty minutes after the last thunderclap.  Every thunderstorm produces lightning.
  2. If you have to be out on the road, look for thunder, darkening skies, increasing wind and flashes of light. If a storm is approaching, safely exit the roadway park your vehicle and turn on your hazard lights. Avoid pools of water or lower ground, as flooding may be an issue. Also avoid high areas, tall isolated trees and utility poles. If you can safely take shelter in a nearby building, do so. If your vehicle if your shelter, stay put! Do not get out to film the lightning, no matter how Instagram worthy.
  3. Close the windows. A lightning strike could jump inside if they are open.
  4. Fold your hands in your lap to avoid touching metal or other conductive surfaces in or outside the vehicle including radios, cell phone chargers, GPS devices, foot pedals or your steering wheel.
  5. If lightning does strike your vehicle, you’ll hear a boom and see a bright flash and possible sparks as well.
  6. It’s a myth that rubber tires protect your from lightning. It’s actually the metal that matters. If lightning strikes, it will generally flow along the vehicles metal cage and into the ground without seriously injuring you. Vehicles with non-metal roofs like convertibles or those with fiberglass shells will likely not protect you from lightning. If you drive a car like this, it’s even more important to stay off the road.
  7. It is technically safe to exit your vehicle after the electrical current has passed into the ground. But it’s a good idea to wait until the thunderstorm has moved on before getting out of your car. Lightning can strike twice.
  8. If someone in your vehicle is hit by lightning, immediately call 911. If the person struck has stopped breathing, begin administering CPR and continue until breathing resumes or professional help arrives. People struck by lightening do not retain an electrical charge and can be handled safely.
  9. Remember- If you are caught in a lightning storm, pull over to a safe place, turn on hazard lights, close windows and always avoid touching metal.

Leif Johnson Ford Road-trip to Kellie’s Baking Company In 2017 F-150 Lariat

This week, Leif Johnson Ford took a mini road-trip to Kellie’s Baking Company. Our team at LJF loves supporting local businesses, as we have been a local Austin business for 60 years. We’re lucky to be surrounded by other awesome and unique spots, and Kellie’s is most definitely one of them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbXufIyEk0I

We decided to take the 2017 F-150 Lariat to Kellie’s. Our sales expert Bob told us his favorite things about this sweet ride on the drive over.

Here’s the lowdown on Bob’s fave’s:

3.6 Liter V6 EcoBoost; 10 speed transmission

Auto Start/Stop

Lightweight body / High-strength military grade aluminum alloy. Stronger yet lighter than the typical steel used on trucks.

The Lariat edition offers upgraded Sony stereo, twin panel moon roof, blind spot assist, etc.

Now that we’ve covered the sweet ride, let’s move onto the sweet treats.

Kellie’s Baking Company has been in business for ten years and at the Burnet Road location for three. They flooded a year and a half ago and reopened just two months ago. They are back and better than ever. If you want magnificently large Nutella stuffed cookies or cookie dough in a cone (no ice cream needed), then this is the place for you. As a bonus, their interior is adorable and the outside offers the “Sweet! you’re here” Texas-shaped sign that is becoming increasingly more popular for photo ops in the .

Did we mention that this spot is right down the road from Leif Johnson Ford? We think Kellie’s is the perfect spot to celebrate purchasing your new vehicle. We won’t judge if you break your Ford in with a cookie crumb or two.

Truck Month at Leif Johnson Ford

Leif Johnson Ford is honored to be able to give back to our community in any way that we can. One of our favorite ways to serve our fellow Austinites is by partnering with Susan G. Komen each year for Truck Month.  What is Truck Month? It’s a time period (we would say month, but one month is never quite enough for us!) where our customers help us donate to the fight against breast cancer. For every new F-150 or F-250 purchased, Leif Johnson Ford donates $100 to Susan G. Komen.  This one hundred dollars affords a cancer screening, which could potentially be lifesaving.

Susan G. Komen envisions a world without breast cancer. They are the ONLY organization that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives in order to make the biggest impact against this disease. Their goal is to reduce the risk of breast cancer deaths by 50% by year 2026. With the help of the community (that’s you and me!), they can help make this goal a reality!

susangkomen.jpg

This year, we started in February and have just decided to extend our donations into April! So far, we have sold over 163 trucks which means that over 16,000 dollars has been donated to Susan  G. Komen. But we’re far from being done yet, and with your help, we can make this our best Truck Month yet.

Thank you, Austin, for giving us the chance to serve you and for helping us fight cancer, one truck at a time!

Customer of the Week: Sky Canaves

Sky Canaves recently bought a Ford Escape from Leif Johnson Ford, and she couldn’t be more excited.

sky

An avid runner, Sky recently took her new ride along for one of her races.

Here’s what she had to say:

“We drove to Cedar Park and back for a race today, and Tommy took some photos. The car is really helping me to feel more comfortable with driving.

sky2

So far, features I’ve enjoyed using most are the keyless passcode, seat memory, blind spot detectors, navigation system and the hands-free liftgate. It also just feels good to drive, much nicer than any other car I’ve handled.”

Did we mention that her and her husband are preparing to run the Boston Marathon? Talk about being #BuildFordTough!

Melissa and team couldn’t have been happier to get Sky in her new Ford and even more pumped for race day!
